Katie Kirkenmeier, LPC, LCPC, PMH-C, ATR
I’m originally from a small town in Missouri but my journey to become a therapist started in Chicago where I moved to attend graduate school. I lived in Chicago for 6 years before settling in the Kansas City metro where I now work in my practice.
My clinical practice started with a focus in trauma after working exclusively with survivors of sexual violence for 7 years. Trauma has a profound impact on every area of our lives and can continue to transcend across multiple generations. My goal has always been to provide a space for individuals to be able to regain power and control over their lives, not for their experiences to be what controls them. Trauma survivors often experience a loss of sense of self and identity and as I began working with more parents, I realized how profound the loss of self can become for new parents and individuals in the perinatal years.
My passion for working with perinatal mental health is personal as my own infertility journey showed me there is not adequate support for individuals going through infertility and during the perinatal period. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are very prevalent and yet there still isn’t much conversation about them. I love being able to normalize experiences for parents and help them understand they’re not alone and do not have to continue to feel unwell. My goal still remains to provide a safe and inclusive space where every person can feel comfortable enough to find their genuine sense of self again. I am a safe space for ALL people of any gender, sexuality, religion, race, size and identity.
Outside of working with clients, I enjoy spending time with my two children, partner, and love being outdoors. In my free time you can find me with a good book or trying to expand my creative outlets.
